Kansas steel market notes
Fabrication and freight
Kansas has fabrication capacity in the Kansas City metro and Wichita. Freight to central and western Kansas jobs adds cost per ton, and oversize loads need permits and routing. We price freight from a realistic fabrication point to your site.
Wind design
Kansas wind loads affect bracing, moment frames and connection design. Larger roof spans and canopies may also have uplift requirements. We take off what the structural drawings show and flag missing connection design when it is delegated to the fabricator.
Storm shelter steel
Storm shelters in schools and emergency facilities may include heavier roof framing, special deck and protective door frames. These are priced as their own scope.
Industrial and aerospace work
Wichita aerospace facilities and metro industrial plants often include crane runways, heavy platforms and equipment supports. See industrial estimating.
Erection pricing
Erection is priced by piece count and weight, with crane size and duration, connection type, height, and access constraints. Projects in occupied facilities or tight urban sites in Kansas City, Kansas can carry lower productivity than greenfield sites.

Frequently asked questions
How is structural steel estimated?
Members are listed by shape and length, converted to weight, and grouped by type. Connections, base plates and miscellaneous items are added, then fabrication, coating, freight and erection labor are priced, usually per ton with adjustments for complexity.
Do you estimate pre-engineered metal buildings?
Yes. We price the building package from a manufacturer quote or a budget, plus foundations, erection, insulation, liner panels, doors and accessories.
Do you include metal deck and joists?
Yes. Joists and joist girders are counted by designation and span, and deck is taken off by type, gauge and area with closures and accessories.
